Barrow AFC manager Adam Murray has issued a stark warning to his team and the league that their upcoming match against National League rivals Hornchurch will be a formidable challenge. Speaking ahead of the Bluebirds' first home league game of the season, Murray emphasized the strength of his opponents, drawing from his past experience managing Eastbourne Borough, where he faced Hornchurch multiple times.
Murray highlighted Hornchurch's recent recruitment and their impressive start to the season, noting that the club's promotion to the National League has not dulled their competitive edge. 'They're obviously a club that's recruited well over the summer,' Murray said. 'I think they're a club that when you look at, like many people do, because they've just been promoted, people put them in that category that they're going to find it hard this season. But when you know that club and you know the resources they put in and the way they go about the business, they're going to be a strong team this season.' Murray pointed to Hornchurch's 3-0 victory over fellow newbies Kidderminster on the opening day as evidence of their strength.
Reflecting on the upcoming match, Murray acknowledged the challenge Hornchurch offer, saying, 'I know it's a cliché, but I really look at this league this season and I think there's such a big group of teams that are going to be up there scrapping. It increases the challenge, and I think their result on the first day of the season shows that.'
The manager also highlighted the managerial rivalry between himself and Daryl McMahon, Hornchurch's manager, noting that they have 'crossed paths as managers over the years' and know each other's tactics well. 'Everyone that was at the game and came out of the game would have said that we were on top in the game for large parts, but there's so much more that we need to do to get to where we need to be,' Murray concluded, emphasizing Barrow's determination to improve and make a strong statement at home against Hornchurch.
