The Barrow AFC Foundation has joined tributes to Dennis Boyd, a true servant of grassroots football in the town, following his death last month. The official charity of Barrow AFC described his decades of volunteer work as a remarkable contribution that gave generations of children the chance to play and enjoy the game.
Dennis Boyd, who died in Barrow, was a founding member of the junior section at Barrow Celtic JFC in 1953. He served the club for decades as a coach, chairman and volunteer, while also holding the position of Chair of the Barrow and District Junior Football League for an incredible 39 years. His influence stretched far beyond just one club, shaping the local football landscape for thousands.
His legacy is found in the thousands of players, families, coaches and volunteers he influenced across Barrow and Furness. A park was named in his honour, Boyd Park, a permanent marker of his dedication. The Barrow AFC Foundation stated that generations of children have been given the chance to play, develop, belong and enjoy football because of Dennis Boyd's commitment to the grassroots game. His contribution made football in the area richer.
A spokesperson for the Barrow AFC Foundation said, "Everyone at Barrow AFC Foundation was saddened to hear of the death of Dennis Boyd this week, a true servant of grassroots football in our town." They added, "Dennis gave an extraordinary amount of his life to creating opportunities for young people to play the game he loved." Condolences have been sent to his family, friends and everyone at Barrow Celtic Juniors.
While the club's first team is focused on its National League campaign, the work of the foundation and the legacy of figures like Dennis Boyd highlight the deep roots of football in the community. Barrow currently sits 23rd in the National League table with 2 points from their opening five matches. Their record stands at 0 wins, 2 draws and 3 losses, with a recent form of DLDLL. They have scored 5 goals but conceded 9, giving them a -4 goal difference.
The immediate focus turns to a tough home fixture against Sutton United on September 5th. Sutton are currently second in the table, presenting a significant challenge for Pete Wild's side as they look to climb away from the relegation zone. The team finds itself 11 points behind the league leaders, Boreham Wood, after the early stages of the season. Fans can plan ahead by viewing the full schedule on our fixtures list.
The tribute from the club's charity shows how the club's identity is built on local foundations. The next match at Holker Street offers a chance for the current team to honour that community spirit with a performance. Barrow will host Sutton United this Saturday.
