AFC Fylde have signed former Gateshead captain Greg Olley, the National League champion from last season, ahead of their upcoming match against Woking. Olley, who was part of York City’s title‑winning squad but did not feature in their League Two opener against Bristol Rovers, joined the Coasters after a successful pre‑season.
New Signing for the Coasters
The Coasters confirmed the deal on their official website, with Olley saying, “It’s a privilege to be here, I’m very excited to get going. I’ve had a very positive pre‑season and can’t wait to translate that to league games. Hopefully we can do something special this season.” He added that his experience of last season’s promotion, the manager’s mentality and the club’s ambition would make the year exciting.
Olley’s Background
Olley was the captain of Gateshead and played a key role in York City’s National League title win in the 2022‑23 season. Despite his contributions to the title‑winning side, he did not appear for York in their opening League Two fixture against Bristol Rovers. His move to Fylde comes after a busy summer for the club, which has also added other new faces to its squad.
Fylde’s Transfer Strategy
AFC Fylde have been active in the transfer market as they prepare to return to the National League’s top flight. In addition to Olley, the club has already signed several new players to strengthen the squad for the upcoming campaign. The club’s recruitment focus appears to be on players with experience of promotion and a strong work ethic.
Other League Moves
While Fylde’s signing is the headline, the National League saw other clubs making moves. Hartlepool United’s summer transfer activity paid off with the likes of Will Harris, Jack Nolan and Corey McKeown delivering a strong start to the season with back‑to‑back wins over Barrow and Aldershot Town. Carlisle United’s manager Rob Elliot confirmed that the club can add further new signings if the right person is found, following recent acquisitions such as Miguel Azeez, Toby Mullarkey, Adam Desbois and Brad Nicholson.
The Coasters will face Woking on Saturday, and Olley’s arrival is expected to bolster their midfield as they aim to build on the momentum they gained in pre‑season training.
