Barrow AFC fan Peter Fones has been sentenced for breaching a football banning order. The 49-year-old was handed a three-year order at South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court in October last year after he told a club employee: ‘If you touch me, I will smash your face in’. Fones was refused entry to a game on August 30 by a member of staff due to his level of intoxication. On that occasion, the court heard Fones smelt strongly of beer and was unsteady on his feet when he attempted to walk through the turnstiles. Prosecutor Peter Kelly said the defendant breached the order on May 2 by being within the parameters of a mapped area he was excluded from entering five hours before and five hours after the scheduled kick-off time. The court heard Barrow AFC were hosting Newport County at 3pm when Fones was seen outside a public house in the area at 12:35pm. Fones admitted one offence of failing to comply with a football banning order on June 18. In mitigation, defence solicitor Andy Gallagher outlined that Fones had a panic attack and turned to alcohol. Fones is engaging well with the probation service and Recovery Steps in addressing his long-standing issues with alcohol. Magistrates fined Fones £80 and ordered him to pay £85 in court costs as well as a £32 victim surcharge. The incident occurred on the final game of the season. Fones started drinking at 9am and had no explanation how he ended up where he did. Alcohol took over and he did not think about being in breach of the order. Fones is still struggling with his alcohol issues but is motivated to address this difficulty.
