Adam Murray called Barrow's first win of the season a release of frustration rather than a celebration. The manager saw his side beat Sutton United 3-0 at Holker Street to finally get off the mark in the National League.

Murray took charge in the summer after leading Kidderminster Harriers to promotion. He inherited a squad rebuilding after relegation from League Two and has spoken of building a club from scratch. The victory, which came after a 2-2 draw with Harrogate, moved Barrow out of the bottom four and up to 18th place.

"There was a good feel around the place but, if anything, it has put more focus into the group," Murray told reporters. He stressed that the performance level should become the standard. "We want more of that - that should be the norm."

The Sutton victory

Goals from M. Williams, I. Marriott and B. Whitfield secured the comprehensive 3-0 result on September 5th. Williams opened the scoring in the 18th minute, with Marriott and Whitfield adding late strikes to seal the points. The clean sheet was a welcome boost for a defence that had conceded nine times in the opening six games.

That win forms part of a recent unbeaten run. Barrow followed it with a 2-2 draw away at Worthing on September 12th, a result that leaves them with five points from their first six matches.

Building from scratch

Murray believes his team is operating at only 50 to 60 percent of its potential. The early-season struggles for points after dropping down a division created a palpable tension around the club. The emphatic nature of the Sutton win provided a clear turning point and a psychological lift for the squad and supporters alike.

The manager's immediate task is to build consistency. Barrow's league standings show they are 11 points behind early leaders Boreham Wood.

What comes next

The focus now shifts to a trip to face Solihull Moors on Tuesday, September 15th. Solihull currently prop up the table in 24th position, offering Barrow another opportunity to climb the National League ladder. Murray will be demanding his players replicate the intensity and quality shown against Sutton as they look to make it two wins in a week.
